TEA issued on April 19th the report of the TAKS Results for Math for the 5th and 8th grades for Jacksonville ISD. The outcome from the April TAKS test includes 5th grade 89% passing with 35% commended (missed no more than 1-2 questions), 8th grade 74% passing with 18% commended.

“The results from this TAKS test are important because these two grades are under the School Success Initiative (SSI), commented Judy Terry, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Curriculum. “The SSI states that all 5th and 8th grade students must pass the math test to be promoted to the next grade level.” The SSI began in 2002-2003 and was expanded to include 8th grade for the first time this year.

“We are appreciative of the work that the teachers, administrators, parents and students put into making these test results be so successful, commented Stuart Bird, JISD Superintendent. “Everyone involved understands the commitment that is needed to get the job done right.”

The April TAKS test is the first testing opportunity for students in these grades. The SSI scores come early so that students who were not successful will have the opportunity to test again in May. Those who did not successfully test in May may take the test again in June.

Fifth grade Scores this year compared to previous years—

2004-2005—overall 64% with 15% commended
2005-2006—overall 64% with 22% commended
2006-2007—overall 87% with 34% commended
2007-2008—overall 89% with 35% commended

This is the first year for 8th grade to be included in the SSI so no previous years are available for comparison; however these students were fifth graders in 2004-2005. The hard work that has taken place is demonstrated by the increase in scores of the 8th grade (74%) students that took the test as 5th graders (64%).
