TAKS Reading Results
For 3rd, 5th and 8th Grades
The beginning of spring brought good news to Jacksonville ISD; students in the district did an excellent job on this year’s first TAKS test! “We appreciate all the efforts of teachers, administrators and parents in helping students to do so well,” commented Stuart Bird, JISD Superintendent. “It takes a united team to help students be this successful.”
The outcome from the February TAKS test include 3rd grade district overall 92% passing with 37% commended (missed no more than 1-2 questions), 5th grade 83% passing with 25% commended, and 8th grade 93% passing with 43% commended.

The results from this TAKS test are important because these three grades are under the School Success Initiative (SSI). The SSI states that all 3rd grade students must pass the reading test to be promoted to 4th grade. Students in 5th and 8th grades must pass both the reading and math tests to progress to the next grade level. The SSI began in 2002-2003 and was expanded to include 8th grade for the first time this year.
“We have different students with increasingly more difficult tests each year and fewer of our students exempt from testing than in previous years, but we are steadily increasing scores. This can be attributed to the administrators and teachers knowing where their students are academically and working to meet their needs,” commented Judy Terry, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Curriculum. “Teachers have worked hard this year helping students to be successful. These scores demonstrate this commitment.”
The February TAKS test is the first testing opportunity for students in these grades. The SSI scores come early so the students that were not successful will have the opportunity to test again in April. Those who do not successfully test in April may take the test again in June.
All results from other TAKS tests administered in February arrive after the next testing opportunity in April, usually in late May.
