Qualifications & Characteristics
The superintendent, as chief executive officer (CEO), is accountable to the Board of Trustees, which expects the CEO to be the education leader of Jacksonville ISD. The CEO works closely with the Board of Trustees to develop and implement policies and programs designed to carry out the district's mission.

In concert with the staff, students, and the community, the Board of Trustees has identified certain characteristics and qualifications as highly desirable in a CEO:

  • A confident, proven educator with successful service as a superintendent/CEO or assistant superintendent in a large district capable of managing a diverse district

  • An experienced team builder who can unify the staff, faculty, and community

  • An effective manager who sets clear direction, delegates authority, and trusts professionals to accomplish the district's mission without excessive oversight

  • A capable strategic planner who can help the board articulate and achieve a vision for the future

  • A progressive thinker willing to listen to others and integrate new ideas and concepts into the district

  • Able to work in partnership with a Board of Trustees and build a climate of candor, mutual trust, and cooperation

  • A reputation as an open, approachable, ethical and enthusiastic leader with a ready sense of humor who is involved in and visible throughout the district and community

  • Committed to Jacksonville ISD for the long term and willing to live in the district

  • Facilities management and bond experience preferred

    The JISD Board of Trustees has employed the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) to assist with the search for a new superintendent. The Board has requested that school personnel and the public be involved in developing the qualifications and characteristics of the person the Board should seek to become the new Superintendent.

    Community Involvement Meetings:
    Community involvement meetings will be held October 20, at the Norman Activity Center, 526 E Commerce St., Jacksonville, between the search consultant from TASB and community members to discuss the desired characteristics of the new Superintendent. The schedule for these meetings is as follows:

    Note: Even though meetings are designated for specific groups, each meeting is open to any interested person who wishes to attend.

    8:30—9:15- Central Office Administration

    9:15—10:00-Campus Administration

    10:15—10:45-Students (Jr./Sr. Class officers and student council officers)

    11:00—11:30- Open to the community

    12:30—1:00-Open to the community

    1:00—1:45-Civic organization leaders / Clergy / Business leaders / Community members

    2:30—3:15-District / Campus Support Staff—Administrative Asst.’s, Aides, Office personnel, etc.

    3:30—4:30-Teachers

    4:30—6:15-Open to the community

    6:30—7:00-School Board Members (First non-action item on the regular Board Meeting Agenda).

    All JISD employees and members of the community are encouraged to attend the meetings and give the consultant their thoughts and insights. For those who wish to address the Board directly with their comments about the selection process, they are asked to sign up for the Public Comments section of the regularly scheduled Board Meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. on October 20, also at the Norman Activity Center.

    Online Assessment:
    One opportunity for members of the community to express their opinions and thoughts is through an online TASB assessment now available.

    The assessment is filled out anonymously. The answers given will assist the board in developing a profile of the leadership qualities to be sought in the new superintendent. Online Assessment closes at 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 20th.
