JISD Healthy Walk Day
Promotes Diabetes Awareness
Nov. 15, 2007

Friday, November 16th students and teachers at schools throughout JISD took time out of their learning day to a campus walk in response to a call by the JISD nursing staff to raise awareness for Diabetes and to promote fitness and health.

Wellness activities are sponsored throughout the coming school year by JISD nurses and members of the Health Advisory Committee. “The Healthy Walk for Diabetes Awareness on November 16 was a significant event.” commented JISD nurse Jamie Maddox. “It is important that students become aware that regular exercise is a way to prevent Type 2 Diabetes as well as other diseases related to obesity.”
An estimated 1.5 million men, women and children are expected to be diagnosed with diabetes in 2007, making diabetes the fastest growing disease in America. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise play roles.
