Elementary Schools Celebrate
Grandparents' Day
September 7, 2007

Friday, September 7 found students in all four of the Jacksonville ISD elementary schools celebrating National Grandparents Day. Each school chose to honor grandparents in a different way:

- Joe Wright hosted an early morning breakfast honoring grandparents.
- Fred Douglass grandparents were invited to have lunch with their students.
- East Side grandparents were treated to lemonade and cookies at an afternoon social.
- West Side grandparents visited the classrooms and participated in a special activity with their students. They were then invited for cookies and lemonade in the cafeteria where they heard about the 3 For Me Program encouraging grandparents to volunteer 3 hours at West Side during the school year.

National Grandparents Day proclamation, signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, set aside the first Sunday after Labor Day as a day to celebrate grandparents. September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the autumn years of life.
