Jacksonville ISD Gifted & Talented Program

JISD Passport Program

Gifted and talented students are young individuals who perform, or show the potential for performing, at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who:

  1. exhibit high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area,
  2. possess an unusual capacity for leadership, or
  3. excel in a specific academic field.

The Jacksonville Independent School District recognizes that gifted students have special needs and abilities, which must be addressed. The JISD Passport Program for Gifted Students provides opportunities beyond the regular curriculum to broaden knowledge, skills, and experiences. It provides opportunities for students to explore their unique potential and enables them to make positive contributions to society.

Elementary (K-5 ) identified students are served in a one day weekly pull-out enrichment program on their campus.

Grade 6 students are served within academic teams and may/may not be clustered with other high achieving students who are not identified gifted.

Grade 7 and 8 identified students are served in the Horizon Pre-AP language arts class, advanced mathmatics classes, and grade level science and social studies classes with appropriate modifications.

All teachers serving identified students are required to complete 30 clock hours special training in gifted education (including nature and needs, assessment, and curriculum differentiation and creativity) followed by an annual six hour update.

Identified gifted students in grades 9-12 are provided service opportunities through Advanced Placement studies, the Distinguished Achievement Program, independent study, college concurrent enrollment, accelerated classes, and many extracurricular academic activities.
