How Not to Burn

East Side Elementary students learned some important skills for preventing and surviving house fires from members of the Jacksonville Fire Department and the Fire Safety House from The Texas State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO), a program of the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI).

The Fire Safety House is a tool used to teach children fire prevention, exit drills in the home and proper safety procedures in the event of a fire.

The students had the opportunity to practice eliminating potentially dangerous situations. They learned about feeling a "hot" door, locating emergency escape routes. The children practiced exiting a fire safely as the safety house fills with a nontoxic, water-based "smoke," and the importance of having a meeting place outside the home.
