Special Education Evaluation
Definition of Service:
As a part of the JISD Child Find Process, students with learning difficulties who attend school within the district, may be referred for a special education evaluation by their campus’ Student Teacher Assistance Team (STAT). Students may be referred to their campus STAT for referral consideration by the classroom teacher, parent, or other professionals who have knowledge of the student
The campus STAT is responsible for contacting the JISD Special Education administrative office thereby initiating a special education referral for evaluation. Parent permission for evaluation is required as well as information from the student’s current teachers, parents, and other referring staff.
A Comprehensive Individual Evaluation will be completed followed by an Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meeting to review the evaluation. The ARD Committee, which includes the parent, will determine if a student is eligible for Special Education services, develop an Individual Education Plan for an eligible student and determine placement needs.
Pre-school Evaluation
As part of the Child Find Process, JISD provides evaluations for children that are pre-school age (3-5), and ages 0-5 for children with visual and/or auditory difficulties. Children are referred for evaluation by the parents, the local ECI agency, or pediatricians. Students who are referred are screened to determine if an evaluation is needed. If an evaluation is deemed appropriate, an evaluation will be initiated. After an evaluation is completed, an Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) meeting is held to provide feedback to the parent and to report the results of the evaluation. If eligible for services, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is written at this meeting. Placement options for services are then recommended.
Evaluation
Referrals for non-public school students are made through the special education office. Referral data includes information from the parent(s) and the private or parochial school, when appropriate.
