November 2007 21st Century
Teaching Award Recipient
Nov. 26, 2007

Jacksonville ISD announced that the 21st Century Teaching Award recipient for November is Melissa Sciba, a 2nd grade teacher at West Side ES. Melissa uses one of the new interactive whiteboards, purchased for use in the elementary school classrooms, daily to teach math. Her lessons using the whiteboard help students to visualize math in action. In addition, her students have learned to use the whiteboard to answer problems and demonstrate mastery of concepts taught. Mrs. Sciba and her students have been so successful using the interactive whiteboard in her classroom that she has inspired other teachers to try teaching lessons using the whiteboard.
Mrs. Sciba has been teaching for 2 years, both at West Side ES. Last year she taught Pre-K and this year teaches 2nd grade. She graduated from UT Tyler.
An interactive whiteboard is a large interactive display that connects to a computer and projector. A projector projects the computer’s desktop onto the board’s surface, where users control the computer using a pen-like device. The board is typically mounted to a wall or on a floor stand.
